How can a school tell whether it truly protects curiosity?
A school can claim to value curiosity while still rewarding only quick, correct answers. The stronger test is to look at what happens when a child asks an unexpected question. Is there time to explore it? Does the teacher use it to deepen learning? Are students allowed to investigate, disagree respectfully and revise their thinking? Curiosity becomes visible in the quality of the questions a classroom is willing to hold.
Look at the questions students are allowed to ask
Classroom observation should notice more than teacher explanation. It should also notice student questions, wait time, opportunities for inquiry and whether learners are asked to explain how they know. A curious classroom is not noisy without purpose. It is intellectually active because students are invited to make connections and test ideas.
Curiosity and academic rigour are not opposites
Rigour is sometimes confused with giving more content and expecting faster recall.
